Schools are closed. On holiday, the children will have more sun, sea, pool, or shortly outdoors. Children need to be careful about the risk of summer diseases in order to spend these beautiful days healthy. Yeditepe University Hospital Department of Pediatrics and Head of the Department of Pediatric Allergy Professor. Dr. Reha Cengizlier explains what diseases are risky for children in summer:
Yaz Summer diseases in children include bowel infections with sunstroke, diarrhea and vomiting, hepatitis A, pool infections; external and middle ear infections, urinary tract infections, upper respiratory tract infections, skin fungus, insect stings, allergic reactions and fractures and dislocations.
Dr. Cengizlier describes these diseases that may occur in children as follows:
Ear infections: Microbes such as fungi, bacteria, viruses that enter the ear from the outside can cause itching, followed by inflamed, smelly currents. The yellow-brown plug, which is normally secreted in the ear, attracts dirty water, swells and facilitates the disease of the microbe in it. If there is a smelly, white, yellow, green discharge, see the doctor immediately and apply the necessary and correct medication.
Respiratory tract infections: As droplet infection, microbes entering the body through breathing, upper respiratory tract, throat infection can do. It starts with fever, malaise, weakness, sore throat. It can turn into much heavier tables. In addition, immersion in the water can lead to deeper transport of potential microbes in the throat and sinusitis.
Urinary tract infection: It is more common especially in girls. Waiting with a wet bathing suit, entering into unclean water or playing by sitting on the water's edge makes it easier for microbes to enter. Urinary tract infection may occur with symptoms such as burning during urination, frequent urination, abdominal pain, fever or vomiting. Sometimes many of them are together. Early diagnosis and treatment will prevent further serious and permanent discomfort.
Sunstroke: If the child stays under the effective sun for a long time, if he doesn't get into the game and replace the lost water, after a while, symptoms like fever and weakness start. The lack of elements such as sodium and potassium in the water lost from the body exacerbates the symptoms. Depending on the severity of water loss, up to shock can occur. Stroke, frequent water and fruit juice, buttermilk, which includes elements such as ayran, the child is left to play in the afternoon sun, other times under supervision and without having to play in the sun can be prevented. When it occurs, it should be given plenty of fluids with different contents immediately.
Sunburn: The most common discomfort in this period is sunburn. Protection is important here. You should not sunbathe when the sun's rays are steeper than 45 degrees. The sun burns in the water. It emits both direct and reflected light. Therefore, it is appropriate to use sunscreen creams around 30 factors in children. The subject to be considered; these creams are applied half an hour before the sun goes out, and repeated every 3 hours. It may be useful to wear a wide-brimmed hat, especially for children playing on the shore to protect the face.
Fly-insect stings: Fly-insect stings can also cause itching, followed by inflamed wounds on the skin. If possible, use protective gauze curtains at night. It is not correct to apply chemical fly repellents to the skin frequently, especially in infants because of absorption from the skin. In summer evenings, it is necessary to reduce the area that the fly will insert with long sleeved, thin, breathable cotton clothes. At night, the room with mosquito nets is well-ventilated before medication and bedtime. Local antipruritic creams, ointments, lotions containing antihistamines and additional drugs can be used for insect bites.
Fungus: Fungus is an infectious skin disease. Wet swimsuit prepares the ground. It can be transmitted from environments such as pools, bathrooms, toilets, which are not open enough for general use, using slippers and towels used by patients. Itchy, sometimes red, sometimes white-crusted appearance. It is absolutely necessary to use the appropriate fungicide for the appropriate time under doctor control.
Skin allergies: Externally, it may be flushing, itching due to the contact of some plants. Redness, itching or even edema may develop on the skin due to direct sunlight. Sometimes cold water, even just water, can cause erythema and angioedema, redness, swelling, itching on the skin. Antiallergic medication should be given immediately and medical institution should be consulted for the main treatment.
Summer diarrhea: The most common diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. It may be due to viruses, bacteria, parasites or toxins. Ingestion of pool or sea water may cause both microbial and chlorine-induced diarrhea in pool water. Fever, fatigue, excessive water and mineral loss due to shock can go up to the picture. Dirty water, foods washed with dirty water, food sold outdoors, food that comes in contact with flies, insects, degraded food should not be consumed without waiting or storing in proper conditions. Diarrhea can be prevented to a great extent by teaching you to wash your hands before eating, after going to the toilet, not to put dirty hands, dirty food or objects into your mouth. There is no need for a special diet unless diarrhea lasts longer than 10 days. It is most important to replace fluid loss.
Jaundice: A type of contagious jaundice called hepatitis A is transmitted by a special virus. Dirty water, food, dirty hand are the most important means of transmission. A simple infection can begin with complaints of weakness, fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Dark yellow like urine-colored orange peel is marked by yellowing in the eye. It is contagious, it may take a long time to heal. Now we can protect our children from this disease with vaccination. Two doses of vaccine, which can be administered from the age of 1, with an interval of 6 months, play an important role in protection.
