: What is reflux?

: Why does reflux increase during pregnancy?

Burning in the chest and souring in the stomach during pregnancy are mostly due to gastrosophageal reflux. During pregnancy, the ligaments of the lower esophageal sphincter, which are normally tightly closed, begin to loosen due to increased hormone levels in the body. As a result, food and gastric acid begin to come back to the pharynx and throat. This situation makes it easier for the baby to grow and compress the stomach.
: Do eating habits increase this effect? What needs attention?
Kiss. Dr. Hande Akbas: Food that may trigger a burning sensation should be avoided. These include orange juice, lemon, lemonade, grapefruit juice, tomatoes, mashed potatoes, french fries, onions, veal fillets, spicy chicken wings, ice cream, ice-cream milk, cheese pasta, spaghetti with sauce, liquor, wine, coffee (with caffeine or decaffeinated). ), tea, vinegar and oily salad, brownie, chocolate, potato chips. The possibility of triggering reflux is very low and among the recommended foods, apples, bananas, baked potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, green beans, peas, steaks, chicken breast meat, egg whites, fish, feta cheese, goat cheese, bran, oats, corn bread, rice, mineral water, lean salad. Caffeinated drinks (coffee, tea, cola) should be avoided. Such drinks relax the lower esophageal sphincter and cause gastric acid to return. Alcohol should be avoided.
