Oils have negative effects on health when taken too much and also show important problems when taken inadequate. Therefore, in the first years of life, we need certain amounts of fatty acids for brain development and completion of eye functions.
First we need to know about fats, we need enough information about these subjects with which nutrients we can provide these fatty acids.
• Dietary fat can be divided into two parts. Saturated fats and unsaturated fats.
• Saturated fats are found in butter, margarine, tail oil and meat and inner fats, milk, yoghurt, and avocado we see in solid form at room temperature.
• Unsaturated fats are divided into three groups. Omega 3, omega 6 and omega 9 oils.
• Omega 3 is found in green leafy vegetables, fish, vegetable oils. Omega 6 vegetable oils are found in the liver, brain. Omega 9 is rich in olive oil and hazelnut oil.
• Unsaturated fatty acids are present in different amounts in all vegetable oils. Of these fatty acids, omega 3 and omega 6 are not synthesized in the body and must be taken from outside. These fatty acids play an important role in the development of the brain and eye, myelination (nervous system development) in infants. In addition, increasing the amount of omega 3 fatty acids in the diet shows the protective effect of coronary heart disease.
• In babies who are breastfed for 6 months alone, these fatty acids do not need to be taken from the outside, breast milk contains these fatty acids in sufficient amounts. However, we know that the amount of fatty acids in breast milk varies depending on the amount of red meat and fish consumed in the mother's diet, so breastfeeding mothers must keep fish and seafood in their red meat diets.
• However, it is necessary to provide a sufficient amount of essential fatty acids to the diet due to the decrease in intake of breast milk after the start of additional foods after 6 months.
• In order to achieve this, the vegetable purees should be supplemented with oil. Prepare the best oil pattern by dividing the standard empty bottle into 4 equal parts, 1 part of sunflower oil and 3 parts of olive oil, as I wrote earlier. Add 2-3 teaspoons of vegetable purees.
• When starting meat from supplementary foods, add fatty fish to your baby's vegetable puree twice a week instead of red meat. The most beautiful examples of oily fish are sardines, salmon, tuna and mackerel.
• Egg yolk is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, so give the egg yolk every day for breakfast meals.
• If you prefer green leafy vegetables, you will still provide unsaturated fatty acids.
Adequate and balanced nutrition is very important for your baby's normal growth and development. In developed countries, some nutrients were enriched with vitamins and minerals in order to provide adequate nutrients and the health of the society was tried to be protected and they solved most of the problems due to the stable nutrition policies. However, evidence-based studies are required to find this solution.
